Owner: Sally Reay

Description:

Phoenix52 is a new community arts project run by and for residents living in Barton Hill, Lawrence Hill, Redfield, Easton and The Dings. The group, which already includes local artists, makers, photographers, sculptors, musicians and performers, is organising a range of creative opportunities and activities in the area over the coming months.

We meet on the first Wednesday of the month, at 6.30pm in the Art Room in The Wellspring Healthy Living Centre, Beam Street, BS5 9QY.

We would love to hear from creative people living or working in the area who are interested in running creative workshops, in creating new work or exhibiting/performing as part of the festival. We’d also like to hear from you if you or your children are interested in taking part in creative workshops, for example mask making, drumming or dancing so that you can take part in a celebratory parade which is being planned as part of the festival.

Phoenix52: Mission Statement

Phoenix52 is a newly formed group of local residents, artists, makers and performers who have come together to network and to collaborate on a range of community arts projects.

Our mission is to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of the arts and to develop a range of creative opportunities within the community. We aim to appeal to and reflect our diverse community by encouraging participation and celebration of creativity in all its forms within our community. We also aim to help local artists, makers and performers to develop and grow their practices within the community.

We plan to do this by coordinating and promoting a programme of free or low cost workshops, events, exhibitions and performances and by the creation of new work (artwork, performance, installation, etc) that reflects or benefits the community. These activities will culminate in an annual festival that celebrates creativity in our community and provides local residents with the opportunity to try or enjoy something new. We aim to work in partnership with residents’ groups and other local organisations wherever possible and to encourage inclusion and participation by all parts of our diverse community.

Membership of the Phoenix52 is open to anyone who lives or works in Barton Hill, Lawrence Hill, Redfield or The Dings. Members range from fully-fledged artists, makers and performers to enthusiastic amateurs and local residents with an interest in the arts. We meet monthly on the first Wednesday of the month, at 6.30pm in the Art Room at The Wellspring Healthy Living Centre, Beam Street, BS5 9QY.

The Phoenix52 is a not-for-profit organisation currently funded by Community at Heart and is run by local residents, artists and supporters of the arts and the local community who have volunteered their time and expertise freely. The group is supported by Sally Reay, who is part-time Project Manager and Sarah Winch, The Arts Programme Manager at The Wellspring Healthy Living Centre.

Our Priorities are:
• To increase participation in and enjoyment of the arts;
• To provide opportunities for the development of skills, at a variety of levels;
• To improve access to the arts for all.

Our Core Activities are:
• To create, develop and maintain a website that is easy to use and appeals to all residents in the community that promotes creative activities such as workshops, courses, exhibitions, gigs, performances and events in the local area and that also provides a directory of creative talent, venues and services in the area, promotes the annual event and also acts as a an online gallery too.

• To coordinate an annual festival that provides a platform for local people to showcase their creativity in all it’s forms.

• To encourage the creation of new work (artwork, performances, events, installations, etc) during the build up to the annual festival.

• To encourage artists, makers and performers to coordinate and run workshops that allow local people the opportunity to try new things on the run up to and during the annual festival.

• To develop Phoenix52 in a sustainable way so that members are able and are encouraged to continue meeting and planning activities after the current funding comes to an end in July 2009.
